Council President Michael Savary's letter to the editor in response to Mary Bolash was printed in today's Express-Times. If you didn't get a chance to see it, here it is for your viewing pleasure.
Support Alpha pool, join committee
I would like to thank Mary Bolash for her Feb. 27 letter -- it provides me the opportunity to address the residents of Alpha and all our pool patrons to explain the real happenings involving the pool.
We greatly appreciate every effort the pool fund-raising committee put forth to help the pool. I am unsure how Mary calculated her figure, but actual profits turned in to the borough were just over $6,000. We appreciate every dollar and praise every one who has given time to support the John Dolak Pool.
Even though some supporters don't welcome change in pool leadership and have declined to further assist the pool, we are hopeful that a new generation will step forward and continue the progress and profitability that has been started.
For the record, I'm in favor of the pool, but I don't support requiring taxpayers of Alpha to pay for it. Together with the pool committee, I will work hard to make the pool self-sustaining so that it can repay the $130,000 debt associated with it. If the pool cannot repay the debt, our taxpayers will, through general taxation. I won't be swayed by self-interest groups but will work for the betterment of the pool and to protect the interests of all our residents.
A new fund-raising committee is now being formed for citizens who really care about the pool and our community. Please contact me at 908-454-0088, Ext. 174, to join.
MICHAEL J. SAVARY
Borough Councilman
Alpha
I couldn't have said it better myself. Good Job, Mike!
Anyway, if anyone out there knows Mayor Babinsky of Pohatcong personally, give him my regards. He believes that email is a convenient and expedient method of communication, but he recommends that he and I communicate through more "official channels". (His words not mine!) When did email become an unofficial channel of communication? I guess he wants me to waste taxpayer funds and send him a letter with a stamp on it when I could easily shoot him off an email or three for free. Oh well.
